I hope we can find out if it is the 2 spider gear units letting go so fast. This model is the strongest Nissan currently offers. So that is why all marketing was geared to off-road. Rinky, I dont think you can see the spider gears without pulling it out, and the stealer wont do that. I am pretty sure that this is the culprit I have already replaced my tires and also my rotors and brake pads. Remember to look under Titan.
The reason is probably that Nissan had been honoring the warranty, so few people got pissed enough to file a complaint. If you feel comfortable opening up the rear dif cover it would be interesting to confirm if you in fact have the 2 version. So they are probably going to call it abused. They told me to call 1-800-get-lost. I don't know my ass from my elbow with regards to what I'm looking at tho and if I have 2 or 4 Spider gears. Ignore the bolt with the arrow repeat for each side : Step 4: Remove the tie ends from each side using a 14mm socket wrench and a 14mm open end wrench. I have a feeling that the reason Lloyd didn't get what he wanted from Nissan had a lot to do with his attitude at every step of the process.
They certainly didn't baby them. There were quite a few 2nd gen's there I don't have a total for you and this was a front the blew up not a rear. The Dealer told me that the took it for a test drive when I dropped it off and it went out completely on them. You have the original factory skids? You can't do just the seal because it is behind the bearing. The truck bottoms out so bad I am greatly concerned about other construction, and I see some terrifying wear on older Xterras, including week front clips, suspension and engine mounts. .
The axle brackets have a slot and a hole. What Dave puts the XterraRacer is 100x more pounding than the trails we do while rock crawling. Maybe a solution would be to remove the Spider gears and re-heat-treat them, but I'm not a metalurgist and don't know if that would do more harm than good. But, should be able to learn from the vin if it has 2 whopping spider gears or not during this process sometime? The magnet pushes a plate with fingers out to engage the locker. I mean everybody has wondered ,why so high geared? I even called my dealer back in the states and he recommends a machine shop but won't tell me how they do it in their shop. It can be done but may not be much cheaper than replacing the axle because of the added labor involved with cutting and pressing to get the bearing off.
You'll probably get bashed for saying negatives about Nissan around here, so please, do yourself a favor and keep any negatives to the 05+ models, as the previous models do not suffer from this weak condition! Sounds like something will be available soon, but I have a feeling it will be limited to protoype testing for little while. But now with 35's im really goning to have to watch what I do. Note the following, and install in the reverse order removal, during the installation, do not damage the wheel bearing seal, do not allow paint to adhere to wheel bearing seal, check each mating surface for water and foreign matter. The spider gears are the red ones. I am going to ask for a detailed list of repairs. I was actually fairly impressed with the durability.
It was really surprising what they said, many illegal things, rediculous acusations and things that violate there own warranty! And that includes ten years of wheeling. I hope the Best for you and understand anyones distrust and heartbreak over this, but on the whole my X has been good to me. Remove the axle bearing studs to release the axle bearing from the back plate and torque member using a suitable hammer or press. That allows you to see the spiders, cross shaft etc. Exploding diffs are nearly unheard of, and I have never heard of cross pins failing! I am trying to confirm this.
Now I don't and I can do it in 2wd if its dry. Put alignment marks on the disc rotor and wheel hub and bearing assembly, then remove the disc rotor. I have not seen this as a big problem, so what the heck are those guys doing? April 07, diffs front and rear are blowing like crazy. Just ran Box Canyon and it held up well, but let's see what happens when I get another 24K miles on it. You can reassemble it in a vise if you don't have access to a press.
From what I can tell the 4 spider gears are also no good, but should last significantly longer. The new body Tacomas have worse diffs than we do. Not to be taken internally. Any further work will be done as far away from Nissan garages as I can get! They replaced the bearing and seal as it required. On the the 2 spider diff, it has a large opening on both sides.
